GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS 2002 Ė THE NOMINEES

GOLDEN GLOW FOR ALL
The Golden Globes may as well be renamed the Gold Ďn Greens this year, with several Australians prominently nominated in key categories; but letís not get too nationalistic. What matters most is the quality of the work, not the nationality of the nominee, writes Andrew L. Urban.

Itís not impossible to imagine a scenario in which the Antipodeans will carry off both the Best Picture awards, with New Zealandís Lord of the Rings for Drama, and Moulin Rouge for Music or Comedy, along with the matching Best Director awards for Peter Jackson and Baz Luhrmann. It is also possible that Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman (who is nominated for both Moulin Rouge and The Others) will come home with Oscar in the lead acting categories.

Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman (in Comedy or Musical categories for Bandits and Kate and Leopold) and Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke for their original score for Ali, could well be winners, too.

And imagine if Jill Bilcock won her deserved Oscar for editing Moulin RougeÖ. Then there is Judy Davis and Simon Baker in their respective TV acting categories. (Judy Davis for the telemovie, Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows [with Rachel Griffiths nominated in the support category for the same show]; Simon Baker for the tv series, The Guardian.)

While we are proud of the achievements of Australians (you only have to check this site on a regular basis to see that) it seems that undue emphasis is placed by us all in the media on the national score. This is unavoidable and in some ways desirable, but it should be kept in check lest it become a part of kneejerk nationalism that sneers at the achievements of others.

It would be counterproductive to poo-pooh the American nominees, because doing so simply diminishes the achievement of the Australians, by devaluing the worth of their competititors as nominees. By any account, all the nominations deserve recognition, so letís congratulate them all, and letís have a special beer for the Aussies, but letís keep it all in perspective.
