BLUES BROS 2000: SOUNDTRACK

CD Soundtrack Review
by Andrew L. Urban

Men in Black may have copied the black sunnies, the black hats, ties, suits, but they didn’t get near the blues attitude that makes the Blues Brothers such a musical trip. This is the soundtrack album that puts the fun into funky, with 18 solid gold tracks, all working with that infectious blues feel, in the varied ways of Aretha Franklin reprising her eternally fabulous R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the extraordinary (5 minute) jam on How Blue Can You Get, with vocal (and some instrumental) gems from B.B. King and Isaac Hayes to Lou Rawls, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Bo Diddley, among others. This and the last track, New Orleans, are alone worth the price of the CD, superbly produced maintaining its atmosphere, its energy and its irresistible rhythms from start to finish. Not to mention the fabulous reworking of John The Revelator, a classic blues-gospel piece given extra shine in this setting.

The film is enormously aided by the music, and the music easily stands alone as a CD worthy of any music lover’s collection. You can play it when you’re crying, you can play it when you’re smiling, you can play it when you’re loving. Like I said in the movie review, blues lovers will think they’ve died and gone to heaven; not only to hear this bunch, but to see them jam.
