NEW POLICE STORY
After a disastrous shoot out with the evil bank robber Joe (Daniel Wu) and his gang of kids from rich families, Hong Kong's most decorated police officer, Inspector Wing (Jackie Chan), takes a long leave and hits the bottle. But rookie cop Frank (Nicholas Tse), is determined to wake Wing up, get his act together and return to the force, so that the fallen hero can finish the case he started; the bank robbers - viciously playful gamers - are still at large. Inspector Wing and his new partner gear up for the final round of a very dangerous game and they have nothing left to lose.
Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Spectacular stunts and a gripping crime story deliver on the promise of Jackie Chan's New Police Story, even paying homage to the seminal bus stunt sequence in the 1985 original Police Story that set Chan on the road to superstardom. The fact that he still has it after 20 years or more is in itself pretty amazing, and in this big budget action drama, he and the filmmaking team go to great lengths to deliver the thrills.
There are chases on foot across and under concrete highways, down the sides of skyscrapers and across busy malls, among others. The action is always in service of the plot, though, and the central story has a couple of interesting subplots, one of them romantic and involving the central character.
Innovative as ever, Chan's stunt work is acrobatic with touches of humour and humanity. The film showcases terrific performances from Chan himself in a role that's a good deal more emotionally demanding than usual, and from the two youngsters on either side of the good/bad divide; Daniel Wu as the baddie Joe, and Nicholas Tse as Chan's young sidekick, Frank.
There's not much more you can ask of a Hong Kong police action drama than this, and it's no wonder the film won Awards for visual effects and action cinematography (along with nominations for Best Action, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Picture) at the 2005 Hong Kong Film Awards.
