BAFTA AWARDS 2006 - WINNERS

BROKEBACK BAFTA SUCCESS
Destined to being forever referred to in lazy and inaccurate reporting as a gay cowboy movie (they tend sheep, for a start), Brokeback Mountain has gathered four more major awards at this year’s BAFTAs - Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay – while Wallace & Gromit was voted Best British Film, and Australia’s Dion Beebe deservedly took home the award for his cinematography in Memoirs of a Geisha.

While it’s good to see Jake Gyllenhaal receive some recognition for his role as Jack in Brokeback Mountain, it sits oddly to see him in the Supporting Actor category for a role that is one half of a two hander. But acting awards have all gone a bit crazy this year, with George Clooney also shoved into the Supporting category for his role in Syriana, which is clearly a leading role. Still, who cares as long as the trophy comes home …

The Brits had the good sense to recognise Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit, which not only scores for animation talent but a very British sensibility.

Perhaps the toughest category this year is the Adapted Screenplay, in which all the nominees are examples of outstanding work in a field notoriously difficult.

As for the Lead Actress, Reese Witherspoon was lucky to scrape in here, perhaps because (inexplicably) Kathryn Keener wasn’t nominated for her role in capote, and neither was Felicity Huffman for Transamerica – a film that did not seem to be eligible for this year’s BAFTAs.
