HEY, GOOD LOOKING!
Isa (Michèle Laroque), Alice (Valérie Benguigui), Léa (Aure Autika) and Nina (Géraldine Nakache) are close friends who talk about men, marriage and children. Their lifestyles have the same chaotic rhythm and also the same shared Jewish background. Isa is a divorcee who runs a busy beauty shop, and has a crush on an English financier. Her sister Alice is having marriage problems and finds solace in the company of a single father. Pampered heiress Léa finds it hard to detach herself from her ex-husband and spends all her time pampering herself, while Nina wants to shape up and start dating.
Review by Louise Keller:
A vibrant comedy about four women, who share their madcap lives, loves and dreams with each other, Hey Good Looking is lively, funny, mixed up and crazy all at once. Life is like a daily soap opera with flirtations, affairs and infidelities, as the characters try to juggle their complicated lives with love, marriages, children and business. Friendship is the common thread that links these women together, through their highs and lows and tenacious zest for living. While the issues are strictly from a woman's point of view (and sensitively directed by Lisa Alessandrin), the colourful situations and the sharp one liners are enjoyable for all.
We first meet the four women sitting on a playground bench, chatting effervescently as they watch their children playing. They are gossiping, reading magazines, talking about guys and who they've slept with. They are comfortable with each other as they joke about life. Much of the action takes place in Isa's beauty salon, where fake tans, breast sizes, tattoos, massages and waxing all cross paths. Isa is an outspoken, larger-than-life character whose entire existence is one hilarious drama after another. Emotional highlight is the story strand in which Alice finds love with single father Michel - known affectionately as Michelangelo - (Thierry Neuvic), and the sequence in which he declares his feelings is as warm as the bath in which she is relaxing.
The script is fast and filled with great lines. 'I'll sleep with one but I don't spend the night with strangers...or sleep with men I know too well,'; 'Why get a husband... now that suitcases have wheels?'; 'You're fine until you find it - that's the trouble with happiness.' Love is the main theme throughout this energetic and uplifting comedy that leaves us breathless.
