GOLDEN GLOBES 2008 Ė NOMINATIONS

GLOBES AGLOW FOR ATONEMENT
Atonement is much admired by the 80 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who have voted it for seven awards including Best Drama, where the category has been expanded to seven nominations. Andrew L. Urban reports.

Cynics would be grumbling about the expansion of the Best Drama category to seven nomination slots in the Golden Globes (especially as there are another five films in the Comedy/Musical slot and three more in animation), but theyíd be forgetting that the Globes are all about nominations. The more nominations the more stars, the more stars the more attention and glitz and kudos is attached to the Globes, which cannot rely on either the size or profile of its own membership. Itís clever marketing ploy to retain TV power; nobody regards it as watering down the kudos of each nomination.

Nor does it detract from the overall value of the Awards for Hollywoodís filmmakers (and a few players beyond) nor from the value of celebrating films that have been praised by a group of people outside the Academy membership.

Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman are both nominated for two outstanding performances each: Cate in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and also Iím Not There; Philip for Savages and also for Charlie Wilsonís War. This is because the Globes separate drama and comedy/musicals, and the second of each of their nominations is for a performance in a comedy/musical. No wonder stars love the Globes; they also give good party. Hell, it doesnít even matter who goes home with the Golden glob (yeah, I know, itís a globe but it looks like a glob).
