AFI AWARDS 2008 – WINNERS

BLACK BALLOON GETS GONG
On its 50th anniversary, the Australian Film Institute held perhaps its biggest bash in Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, which turned out to be The Black Balloon Evening – with the film winning five major awards, including Best Film. It was also the year’s most commercially successful Australian feature (among the films eligible for an AFI Award and thus excluding Australia).

The Black Balloon is clearly the most acclaimed Australian film of the year, with numerous awards across several categories.

Heath Ledger’s posthumous award for his spectacular performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight was – despite its predictability – a cathartic moment, and the Best Documentary award to Not Quite Hollywood became a tribute to Australian commercial filmmaking of the 70s.

Not everyone was happy, though; one industry stalwart complained that the AFI should rename itself the ATI (T for television) for the preponderance of TV categories on the televised night (10 for TV, 14 for film).
