GOLDEN GLOBES 2012 – NOMINATIONS

STEVEN AND MARTY FACE OFF
Steven Spielberg’s Christmas present has arrived: both his holiday films, War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin, have been nominated for Golden Globes, the former in the Best Drama category, the latter for Best Animation, while George Clooney and Woody Allen are also multiple nominees; but it’s a relatively small (but superbly made) black and white film, The Artist, that is creating hot buzz, with not only the most GG noms but also heavy with Screen Actors Guild noms. Andrew L. Urban reports.

If you thought the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was (unlike the Oscars Academy) a hard nosed bunch, the nomination of Spielberg’s overly schmaltzy rendition of the wonderful story, War Horse surely tests that theory. And it pits Spielberg’s film against Martin Scorsese’s beautiful (and also quite sentimental) Hugo – for which only Marty himself is nominated as Best Director and Howard Shore for the score.

There, too, Shore is competing with War Horse composer John Williams, whose score is as sentimental as is Spielberg’s direction. Nothing wrong with sentiment – it just needs to be kept in check so we don’t lose dramatic traction.

The most inspiring aspect of the nominations is the spotlight of attention it focuses on Michel Hazanavicius’ exquisite film, The Artist (opens in Australia Feb. 2, 2012), with nominations for just about everyone involved, from writer/director to the leads, the music, the lot.

You might also wonder how an American film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, could be eligible for a nom in the Foreign Language category; it’s in Bosnian, and is a controversial story set during the Bosnian war.
