BAFTA 2002: WINNERS

THE BRITS TAKE A GLOBAL VIEW
It has taken the British Academy to recognise excellence in non-US filmmaking like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Shrek, not to mention Russell Crowe and Moulin Rouge.

In this season of film awards, it is obvious that last year’s releases from around the world caused a lot of head scratching at voting time. How to single out the achievements of films as diverse as Shrek and Lord of the Rings, Moulin Rouge and Iris, Gosford Park and Mulholland Drive? Aren’t they all worthy of serious recognition. Well, with a plethora of gongs – and the Oscars yet to come – there was bound to be a sprinkling of awards all over the place. It may not be very logical and even appropriate, but that’s showbiz.
