AFI AWARDS 2002 - WINNERS

Aboriginal stories and filmmakers dominate the AFI Awards winners list, followed by a debut feature about the aftermath of a death on a close-knit group. The Awards won’t be much help to the winning films commercially, but the public can at least take them as reliable guides to quality as well as popularity when it comes time to buy or rent them on DVD, says Andrew L. Urban.

Relegated to a 10.40pm time slot out of the ratings season on the Ten Network, the AFI Awards presentation (Dec. 7, 2002) is fighting a losing battle to remain a meaningful, high profile public event, but at least this year’s awards themselves are ‘safe’. This is especially important for the AFI now, because having a discounted credibility on television (no ratings power) and having undisclosed voting numbers, the awards have to be credible in the public’s view.

The fact that the year’s most popular Australian film, Rabbit Proof Fence, won the Best Film Award, for example, is at least consistent with common sense. (Not that I equate popularity with quality….) Talented emerging Aboriginal filmmaker Ivan Sen and veteran Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil are recognised, along with the adapted screenplay of Australian Rules, set in a small Australian town where footy rules – unevenly - among blacks and whites.

And the Byron Kennedy Award in recognition of contributions to the industry goes to Aboriginal filmmaker Rachel Perkins; this award “recognizes Perkin's amount and breadth of work as writer, director, producer, executive producer and instigator across drama, documentary and television; for her dynamism and creativity; for her outstanding ability to inspire others and work collaboratively; and for her passionate championing of indigenous filmmaking and filmmakers.”
