BAFTA 2003 - THE WINNERS

BAFTA PICKS HER NOSE
Nicole Kidman’s nosey portrayal of the tormented British novelist Virginia Woolf in The Hours has won her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress, shortening the odds for a hat trick at the Oscars for the Aussie actress, but, contrary to expectations, it was Roman Polanski’s The Pianist which won the Best Film and Best Director awards.

Welsh actress-singer-dancer Catherine Zeta Jones won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her showstopping role in Chicago, while Daniel Day-Lewis triumphed over Michael Caine for the Best Actor Award for his role in Gangs of New York.

The skew in favour of the English side of the Atlantic is natural – and well deserved. Indeed, the year’s powerful line up means any of the nominees could be winners. And are.
