BAFTA 2004: NOMINATIONS

MULTIPLE NODS UNDERLINE STAR POWER 
Cold Mountain has been nominated in 13 categories and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 12 for the forthcoming Orange British Academy Film Awards; and star power is underlined with Scarlett Johansson’s (pic) nomination for Actress in a Leading Role for both of her performances in two vastly different films, Girl With A Pearl Earring and Lost In Translation. Sean Penn is also nominated twice for Actor In A Leading Role, for 21 Grams and Mystic River.


Australians will note the absence of Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe from the nominees lists – just as Americans will note the absence of Viggo Mortensen. Indeed, the BAFTA voters only nominated one actor from Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King: Sir Ian McKellen, the British thespian knight. Well, they would, wouldn’t they.

Cold Mountain has been nominated in the categories Best Film, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Anthony Minghella, The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year, Adapted Screenplay, Make-Up & Hair, Sound, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography and Film Music. Jude Law was nominated in the category Actor in a Leading Role and Renée Zellweger for Actress in a Supporting Role.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has been nominated in the categories Film, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Peter Jackson, Adapted Screenplay, Make-Up & Hair, Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Sound, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography, and Film Music. Ian McKellen has also been nominated for Actor in a Supporting Role.

Girl With A Pearl Earring collected 10 nominations, for The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year, Adapted Screenplay, Make-Up & Hair, Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography and Film Music. The film’s director Peter Webber has also been nominated for The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Producer or Writer in their First Feature Film and Judy Parfitt received a nomination in the category Actress in a Supporting Role.

Lost In Translation has picked up 8 nominations, in the categories Film, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Sofia Coppola, Original Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography and Film Music. In addition to Scarlett Johansson’s nomination, Bill Murray has also been nominated in the category Actor in a Leading Role.

Master and Commander also received 8 nominations, in the categories Film, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Peter Weir, Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Sound, Costume Design, Production Design and Cinematography. Paul Bettany was nominated in the category Actor in a Supporting Role.

Big Fish has 7 nominations, in the categories Film, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Tim Burton, Adapted Screenplay, Make-Up & Hair, Special Achievement in Visual Effects and Production Design. Albert Finney has been nominated in the Actor in a Supporting Role category.

Kill Bill received nominations for Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Sound, Editing, Film Music and Uma Thurman has been nominated in the category Actress in a Leading Role. 

Johnny Depp has been nominated in the Actor In A Leading Role category for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean. The film also has nominations for Make-Up & Hair, Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Sound and Costume Design. 

In addition to Sean Penn’s nomination, Mystic River is nominated in the categories Adapted Screenplay, Tim Robbins for Actor in a Supporting Role and Laura Linney for Actress in a Supporting Role. 

Benicio Del Toro joins Sean Penn in the Actor in a Leading Role category for 21 Grams and Naomi Watts in the category Actress in a Leading Role. The film is also nominated in the categories Original Screenplay and Editing. 

Bill Nighy has been nominated in the category Actor in a Supporting Role and Emma Thompson for Actress in a Supporting Role for their roles in Love Actually. The film has also been nominated in the category The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

Anne Reid has a nomination for her role in The Mother in the Actress in a Leading Role category and Holly Hunter has been nominated for Thirteen in the category Actress in a Supporting Role.

The Barbarian Invasions received nominations in the categories Original Screenplay and Film Not In The English Language. In This World has been nominated in the categories Film Not In The English Language and The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

Touching The Void
has been nominated for The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

In the category The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Producer or Writer in their first feature film, Sergio Casci, Writer (for American Cousins), Jenny Mahew, Writer (for To Kill A King) and Emily Young, Writer/Director (for Kiss of Life) join Peter Webber (for Girl With A Pearl Earring).
Other nominations announced were for Short Film and Short Animation. 

The Academy Fellowship and The Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema will be announced at the Film Awards. 

The shortlist for the Orange Film of the Year, for the ten most popular films of 2003 is Bruce Almighty, Calendar Girls, Finding Nemo, Love Actually, Johnny English, Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl, Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines, X2 – X Men United, The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King and The Matrix Reloaded.

The Awards will be hosted for the fourth time by Stephen Fry and will take place on Sunday February 15, at the Odeon, Leicester Square. They will produced by Initial (part of Endemol UK) and broadcast on BBC ONE.
