ACADEMY AWARDS 2004 – THE WINNERS

It’s got a Ring to it: 11 Oscars, including Best Director for Peter Jackson, but the acting awards were spread about, with two for Clint Eastwood’s boys in Mystic River. Australia’s Russell Boyd won the cinematography award and Adam Elliot picked up the animated short Oscar for Harvie Krumpet. Andrew L. Urban reports.

It was never in doubt (was it?) that the Academy would shower the last of the The Lord Of The Rings trilogy with awards- it won every category for which it was nominated. It even managed to award Andrew Lesney for the second film last year, making room for another Australian this year, the veteran Russell Boyd, who now has two gold statuettes, this time for Master and Commander.

The Australian Film Commission (AFC) congratulated director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs on their Academy Award win for the short animation film Harvie Krumpet. “Australia can be immensely proud of the achievements of its film industry and the number of Academy Award nominations received by our artists this year. The Academy Award to Harvie Krumpet for best Short Film (Animated) is a wonderful example of the depth and range of creative talent this country produces,” said Kim Dalton, Chief Executive of the AFC.

Harvie Krumpet was produced with the assistance of the Australian Film Commission, SBS Independent, and Film Victoria.

"This is a stunning result and I am thrilled for Adam and Melanie. After playing with plasticine in their garage for almost two years, shaping a unique, creative vision, to be standing up in front of the world collecting an Oscar is a remarkable story and a tremendous achievement,” said Carole Sklan, Director of Film Development at the AFC.

“The AFC is honoured to have been able to support Adam and Melanie – an outstanding creative team – to make not just Harvie Krumpet, but also a number of their earlier films. It is very exciting to watch the talent we’ve identified early in their careers go on to such acclaim.”

Harvie Krumpet is currently screening, with the AFC-funded short feature Roy Hollsdötter Live, at cinemas in Sydney and Melbourne.

The Return Of The King even won the Best Song Oscar, despite Cold Mountain a favourite with two nominations in that category.

In the only really contentious category, it was Sean Penn who went home with the Oscar, when it really should have been Ben Kingsley. Perhaps Kingsley will get one of those ‘make good’ Oscars for his next role.
